Ingredients

  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, (softened)
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1¼ cups packed brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup Christmas colored M&M's
  • 1 cup chopped pecans ((optional))

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  2. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the butter and shortening on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add the brown sugar, baking soda and ¼ teaspoon of salt; beat until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla; beat well.

  3. Add the flour, mixing at low speed just until combined. Stir in the M&M's and nuts (if desired).

  4. Drop the dough from rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. Cool the cookies for 1 minute on the baking sheet. Using a wide spatula, transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
