Ingredients

  • 24 ounces blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional but recommended)
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ cup cold butter (grated or finely cubed)
  • - ½ cup buttermilk (cold)

Steps

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the blackberries, 1 cup sugar, and cinnamon. Cook and stir until mixture comes to a boil.

  2. In a bowl, combine cornstarch and water until smooth, stir into fruit mixture. Bring to a boil, cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.

  3. Pour into a greased 8" square baking pan.

  4. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  5. In a small bowl, combine the flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter using a pastry blender or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  6. Stir in milk just until moistened. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto hot berry mixture.

  7. Bake, uncovered, for 30-35 minutes or until filling is bubbly and topping is golden brown. Serve warm, with whipped topping or ice cream if desired.
